Countin the days

til Thanksgiving. Do you realize it's next week?
Well of course you do. But I did a little double take whilst looking at the calendar. That one crept up pretty quickly. Maybe in other years it seemed as if I saw a lot of ads for turkeys and pies and this year things are just getting away from me? I decided I had better take a look in the grocery store for a turkey. It's just going to be my husband and myself, 2 kids and my mom and of course the kitties. I could make just a turkey breast but I kinda like making the whole bird. At least right now. I don't mind cooking the whole deal - not that anyone absolutely loves turkey around here. But once a year, it's okay. I like making the gravy - and I'm guessing you don't get a bag of giblets with just a turkey breast - or do you? (someone please confirm or deny.) The smell of the giblets cooking the day before is very important for the olfactory portion of our holiday dontchaknow. It kind of sets the stage, as it were. Smells are pretty important to holidays, wouldn't you agree? Just as I like the smell of giblets and pies cooking, I detest the smell of turnip - so that will not be on our holiday table. Turnips always permeated my house on Thanksgiving day as a kid and I decided long ago not to include them... ever! (okay all you turnip lovers let me have it! go ahead.... ) So I did pick up a turkey yesterday. I am waiting on the pie. I am thinking of making one (apple) and availing myself of Mrs. Smith's skills on the other (pumpkin). We'll see how things go around here. Above is today's postcard. All stamps are from Purple Onion Designs.

Love the card. It's so sweet! I would say "no" to the giblets with a turkey breast, but Will can answer for sure. I'm with you on annual turkey. I really enjoy it on Thanksgiving, but that usually holds me for a year.
My job is to make the pies. I do a pumpkin and pecan. Back in the days when cooking was my creative outlet, I would do more. I like making them pretty, however, Susan is the only one who appreciates it. Stinking Laytons.

You do not get anything with a brest other than...well, the breast.

I'm not a huge turkey fan either, but allow myself one slice just to say I had protien. I'm a stuffing, crap just starch period kind of guy!

The first year Kendra helped cook for "my clan" we handed her a 10lb. bag of potatoes and said, "peel these." "how many?" "all of them." I'll never forget the look on her face! We ate every last drop, stuffing, sweet potatoes, and broccoli/rice casserole to boot. We take eating seriously dontcha know.

Too funny about the turnips...my grandma used to love rutabegas and I can remeber my Dad cooking them in the crockpot on the patio so they didn't smell up the whole house!!

LHJ would eat turkey EVERY NIGHT if he could!!! and he totally LOVES the cooking of the whole bird with side dishes and homemade gravy and cranberry sauce made from the bag of raw berries and so forth. in fact, on years we go elsewhere for thanks-g, when we get home the next day, he will do the entire meal THEN...just for us...luckily turkey & accessories *freeze* quite well! :)

ps: no giblets with t-breast!

pss: we are both neutral on the subject of turnips...
