I originally thought i'm going to scan the one drawing and leave it at that - this one of the sweet n' low packetbut then upon second thought - well here's the drawing i did first

not quite as successful and that got me thinking about that place - the zone - that groove - you know - Danny G. talks about it in Everyday matters - others have spoken about it. I know we talked about it years ago when i was in school. That place you get to when you're drawing (or creating - whatever medium you're working in) where everything else goes away and its just you and what you're doing.
Well i definitely didn't get to that zone with the candy bar wrapper. I don't know why. I do know that i was too consciously working on those letters that spell Hershey's and i could not, for the life of me, draw them.
Totally different story with the Sweet n'Low. I was definitely feeling that zone and i'm pleased with the results. Now i just need to figure out how to spend more time drawing so i'm in that zone more often. Too many distractions the last week. I have barely blogged or barely visited anyone else's. I need to catch up on what everyone else is doing!
oh. for the record, I used my HB pencil in my sketchbook for both drawings as well as a prismacolor pencil for the candy one.
We've been talking a lot about "the zone" around here lately while following Barry Bonds to his record-breaking home run hit! I totally kwim about the zone in art. Although, I love both wrappers, the Sweet & Low wrapper is complete perfection. Must be so relaxing to draw like that.
ReplyDeleteThe Hershey's looks great! Lots of dimension...wrapper looks real. The milk chocolate and the sweet & low words are really really good; perhaps they are easier for you to get absolutely perfect because they are not the negative image? Is that a correct art term...those letters are in pencil, but the Hershey's is outlined leaving the white paper background as the letter color?

I'd love to be drinking a Venti-non-fat-no-whip-white-mocha-please-stir, holding your sketch book while Dizzie Gillespe (My starbucks is really into Dizzie)is playing in the background talking to you about every page. That would be...well...just a hoot!

OOF "the zone"...& contemplation of same...has been big in *these* parts too! synchronicity, baby, gotta love it!!! (oh yeah, and the drawings--as always: AWESOME!) (except now...i want a special dark bar...darnit!)
ReplyDeleteOh yes, I surely know the ZONE!!! It sure looks like you were in "the zone" to me on both of these INCREDIBLE drawings!!! Gotta say, I was in "the zone" last night. Stayed up WAY too late playing with new stamps!!! Wish I could have played even longer, but the blasted alarm clock goes off WAY too early!
ReplyDeleteI know....I LOVE that zone. But time sure does fly when you're in it. Love both wrappers, but the Sweet& Low is kickin! Leave it to Lisa to pick up the irony on S&L vs. A Hershey....LOL! I totally missed it.
